Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse: Film Review

Michael B. Jordan stars as a Navy SEAL caught up in a U.S.-Russian conspiracy while avenging the murder of his wife and unborn child in Stefano Sollima’s visceral action thriller, streaming on Amazon.

This is a film that certainly gives you bangs for your buck and establishment stabs in the back – a sine qua non for this kind of story. And with an awful inevitability, John Clark’s ultimate bad guy emerges from the shadows with some outrageous geopolitical monologuing in the approved supervillain style – prior to a post-credits sting setting up a possible superhero-type franchise along the lines author Tom Clancy envisioned. But there’s not much real spark to it.

Without Remorse review: Is Michael B Jordan’s Amazon movie worth a watch?

Without Remorse is released on Amazon Prime Video on April 30. Michael B Jordan is no stranger to franchises, having starred in Creed, Black Panther and the much-maligned Fantastic Four reboot.

He’ll be hoping for more luck with the start of a new franchise in Without Remorse – or if you prefer the longer name, Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse – which sees him bring a new version of John Clark to the screen.

Previously played by the likes of Willem Dafoe and Liev Schreiber in Jack Ryan movies, John Clark is a key character in the Tom Clancy Ryanverse. When we meet him in Without Remorse though, he’s just an elite Navy SEAL called John Kelly who’s set to retire, with his wife about to give birth to their daughter.

We’d watch Michael B Jordan in anything, but it won’t be a surprise to know the movie isn’t about the perils of fatherhood and nappy changes. Instead, Kelly finds himself out for revenge when a squad of Russian soldiers kill his wife and unborn child in retaliation for a top-secret operation. They tried to kill him too, but failed – and they’re about to regret it.

Teaming up with fellow SEAL Karen Greer (Jodie Turner-Smith) and shady CIA agent Robert Ritter (Jamie Bell), Kelly sets out on a mission to avenge his family’s death and nobody is going to get in his way.
